Description

These barro negro plates come from the town of San Bartolo Coyotepec in Oaxaca’s Valles Centrales region. Coyotepec is known for its distinctive form of burnished, fired black clay pottery. Much of the work from the village retains a rustic, traditional form.

The pieces have surface irregularities and imperfections that are typical for the process. Each is about the same size and shape; there is some slight variation in dimension and form. They are a health size without being overwhelming.

The clay used for barro negro is a normal red color before it is fired. The high-temperature firing and clay processing techniques used in Coyotepec, as well as the burnishing process, create the distinctive black hue.
